To me, there is no place on earth that brings as much joy as my garden. This summer, we moved to a charming little farmhouse, and for the first time, I have a proper garden with three expansive garden beds. My husband and my son, who recently had his wisdom teeth removed before beginning basic training, was able to help me plant the starter seeds, making the experience even more special.
I decided to start my seeds on the front porch, allowing them the warmth and sunlight they needed to grow strong before transferring them to the garden beds. The joy of watching the plants flourish is difficult to describe. At my previous home, I had only a small area to cultivate, but even in that limited space, I was able to grow quite a bit. This year, however, was nothing short of amazing. I harvested nearly 200 tomatoes, 14 ears of corn, a generous amount of green beans, four large pumpkins, and abundant squash and green peppers. This bounty has been especially helpful given the rising grocery prices.
Just at the end of the season, my sunflowers bloomed, adding a vibrant touch to my garden. Looking ahead, I plan to grow onions, cucumbers, and eggplant next year. Gardening has become a therapeutic escape for me, a way to connect with nature and find peace outdoors.
For those living in apartments or with limited space, I can attest that you can still grow a variety of plants in pots as long as they receive adequate sunlight. My gardening journey has taught me this firsthand. Additionally, my neighbors and I have cultivated a wonderful sense of community by sharing our harvests. When I didn’t grow eggplant this year, my neighbors generously shared theirs, and I was able to prepare a delicious neighborhood eggplant Parmesan that everyone loved.
I encourage everyone to give gardening a try. Whether you have a sprawling yard or just a sunny windowsill, the rewards of growing your own food and connecting with others through gardening are immeasurable.
