A Lifelong Bond: My Journey with Margaret
When I was sixteen, I met Margaret, my boyfriend’s mother, who was in her early sixties at the time. That initial meeting sparked a friendship that has profoundly enriched my life and endured for decades. Margaret’s warmth and kindness quickly became a cherished part of my world, and her influence has been a guiding light ever since.
Margaret’s life story is a testament to extraordinary resilience. Growing up with thirteen siblings, she endured a childhood marked by hardship and ingenuity. Their family’s meals often consisted of simple potato and onion sandwiches, which they traded with wealthier classmates for meat sandwiches. Sleeping five to a bed and washing in the cold lake were just part of their daily reality. To stay warm, they would huddle around the furnace in their modest home. Despite these challenges, Margaret’s spirit remained unbroken.
Her journey took a heart-wrenching turn in her thirties when she lost her first husband suddenly to a heart attack. Left to raise her two sons alone, Margaret’s strength and determination were truly inspiring. A decade later, after remarrying, she faced another challenge with the end of this second marriage. Yet, Margaret remained undeterred, working tirelessly as a janitor and lunch lady to support her three sons, showcasing her unwavering dedication to her family.
Throughout high school, Margaret was known for her prowess on the basketball court, where she earned the nickname "Chut" for her impressive ability to “chuck” the basketball. Her talent and leadership made her the best player at Netcong High School.
Since our initial meeting, Margaret has been more than a friend—she has become family. She embraced my four sons as her own, showering them with the same love and care she had for her own family. During my high school years, when I was dating her son, Margaret’s support was a constant comfort. For the past eleven years, she has welcomed us with open arms every Tuesday, making each visit a treasured experience.
Margaret’s influence extended beyond friendship. She taught me to cook Italian food, sharing her rich culinary heritage and infusing our gatherings with delicious, home-cooked meals. She also played a pivotal role in my spiritual journey, guiding me through the process of becoming Catholic and deepening my faith.
Now, at 94, Margaret remains as strong and determined as ever. Her resilience and enduring spirit continue to inspire everyone around her. Our friendship has been a cherished part of my life, and I am deeply grateful for the bond we share and the invaluable lessons she has imparted.
What lovely words for a lovely lady. I wish I have the opportunity of meeting her some day!
